A unique community park created from a neglected cemetery in Bristol, Cemetery Park offers an oasis of nature in the heart of the city. The historic path network provides the design’s backbone, taking the form of swales, hedges, paths and raised walkways – a layer for each century. Having an industrial and religious heritage its strong sense of place is brought to life through a fusion of industrial materials and subtle ecclesiastical symbolism, while large expanses of native plantings, reminiscent of an escape to the English countryside, encourage wildlife into this urban setting.

Winner of a coveted SGD Award in 2013, the judges remarked Nicola was “a fantastic newcomer and standout winner” with the design being “a fascinating, intellectually stimulating idea well communicated. It is a wonderful fantasy of a design that does not destroy the history of the site.”
